Widespread Rainfall Likely Over Andaman & Nicobar Islands Due to Bay of Bengal Circulation

May 12, 2025

Residents of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands should prepare for several days of wet weather as a weather system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to bring widespread light to moderate rainfall across the region.

According to the latest meteorological assessments, a cyclonic circulation has formed over the southeastern Bay of Bengal. While the system currently lacks the intensity to develop into a significant storm, it is strong enough to influence regional weather patterns—particularly over the Andaman Sea and surrounding island territories.

What’s Happening in the Bay of Bengal?

The Bay of Bengal is no stranger to tropical disturbances, especially during the pre-monsoon months of April and May. Presently, a cyclonic circulation is lingering over the southeastern part of the bay, extending up to mid-tropospheric levels. Though no immediate intensification into a depression or cyclone is predicted, the system is drawing in moisture-laden winds from the southwest and southeast, setting the stage for sustained rainfall activity over the next few days.

Rainfall Forecast for Andaman & Nicobar Islands

Starting today, scattered showers are expected to gradually intensify. Widespread light to moderate rainfall, occasionally accompanied by thunder and lightning, is likely across most parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The rainfall is expected to be more concentrated over southern and central areas, especially during late afternoon and evening hours.

  • May 12–14: Intermittent light to moderate rain with isolated heavy spells.

  • May 15 onward: Rainfall likely to continue, though intensity may reduce as the system weakens or moves away.

Impact and Advisory

While this spell of rainfall is not expected to cause significant disruption, local authorities advise residents and tourists to exercise caution. Here are a few key points to keep in mind:

  • Travel disruptions: Flights and ferries may face delays due to low visibility and choppy sea conditions.

  • Fishermen Alert: Sea conditions in the southeastern Bay of Bengal may be rough. Fishermen are advised not to venture out into deep sea areas for the next 2–3 days.

  • Preparedness: Minor waterlogging may occur in low-lying areas. Ensure drains are clear and keep emergency supplies handy.

Looking Ahead

This rainfall event is part of the broader seasonal transition as the region gradually moves toward the onset of the Southwest Monsoon, typically around late May to early June. While this circulation may not lead to a cyclone, the increased moisture and instability in the region serve as early signals of the changing weather landscape.
