Week long Heavy rainfall activities over Seven Sisters, Flooding Risk likely at Assam Valley!

Jun 1, 2024 -

Monsoon remain moderately active over Northeast India after its advancement there giving heavy to very heavy rainfall at various parts of Northeast India, especially close to the towering tall Himalayas & Shillong Plateau. Cherrapunji saw a hoping amount of rainfall accumulation - 1395 mm in between May 27th to 30th, just before the monsoon reached there. Cherrapunji recorded 193 mm of very heavy rains yesterday too. In North Assam & Arunachal Pradesh also receiving heavy to very heavy rainfall with Nari recording 157 mm of very heavy rains on May 31st in Arunachal Pradesh. The rainfall activities was occurring because of an active east west trough on the foothills of Himalayas connected with a circulation over Assam, possibly remnants of Cyclone Remal. However both of those featured fizzled out nearly & due to that the Seven sisters likely to see reduction of rainfall activities in the upcoming days. However due to the topographical position of Shillong plateau & Assam valley they're still able to get heavy rainfall from the monsoon clouds that hangs around the valley & the cliffs of Northeast India. Meghalaya, especially Cherrapunji regions get more rainfall due to continuous moisture supply from the Bay of Bengal causing clouds to develop all the time over the region. This activities likely to remain throughout the week & thus such conditions could lead to flood & water logging issues at low lying areas such as Kaziranga National Park & other areas damaging the vast tea gardens of Assam. Flash flood could also lead minor landslide at Cacher areas & could affect the Transport & communication services over Haflong, Silchar, Hailakandi etc areas. We will have a close eye on the rainfall events occurring over the states of the Northeast India.
