India braces for widespread rainfall and severe weather as multiple synoptic systems, including Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Montha’ over the Bay of Bengal and a Depression over the east-central Arabian Sea, continue to influence the country’s weather. These systems are set to bring heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and thunderstorm activity across the southern, eastern, central, western, and northeastern regions of India over the coming days.

🌊 Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Montha’ – Current Status and Track

The Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Montha’ [pronounced Mon-Tha] is currently positioned over the west-central Bay of Bengal, moving north-northwestwards at a speed of around 15 kmph during the past 6 hours.
As of 1430 hours IST on 28th October 2025, the storm center was located near latitude 15.6°N and longitude 82.5°E, approximately:

  • 70 km southeast of Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh),

  • 150 km south-southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh),

  • 250 km south-southwest of Visakhapatnam, and

  • 480 km south-southwest of Gopalpur (Odisha).

The system is expected to continue moving north-northwestwards and cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kakinada by the evening or night of 28th October as a severe cyclonic storm with maximum sustained winds of 90–100 kmph gusting up to 110 kmph.
Strong coastal winds, high sea waves, and storm surges are likely to affect low-lying coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Odisha during the landfall process.

🌊 Depression Over the Arabian Sea

A secondary system—a Depression over the east-central Arabian Sea—is moving northeastwards at about 7 kmph.
As of 1430 hours IST on 28th October, it was centered near latitude 17.3°N and longitude 68.2°E, about:

  • 480 km southwest of Veraval (Gujarat),

  • 530 km west-southwest of Mumbai (Maharashtra),

  • 630 km west-northwest of Panjim (Goa), and

  • 870 km northwest of Mangalore (Karnataka).

The system is likely to move northeastwards towards the coasts of Maharashtra and Gujarat over the next 36 hours, bringing moderate to heavy rain along with strong surface winds across the Konkan coast and parts of western India.

🌀 Other Active Weather Systems

  • Upper Air Cyclonic Circulation:
A strong circulation is active over northeast Rajasthan and adjoining areas, extending up to 4.5 km above mean sea level.
This system is enhancing moisture inflow and triggering widespread thunderstorms and rainfall activity across Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and parts of Bihar.

  • Associated Trough:
The trough from this cyclonic circulation extends from northeast Rajasthan across the northeast Arabian Sea and central Gujarat region, influencing rainfall over Gujarat, Maharashtra, and adjoining Madhya Pradesh.

  • Western Disturbance:
A Western Disturbance as a trough in mid-tropospheric westerlies lies along Longitude 75°E to the north of Latitude 32°N, bringing isolated showers and cloud cover over western Himalayan states and northern plains.
